CBD flowers or CBD hash: the differences
In the world of low-THC hemp, there are two main product forms: flowers, also called buds, and hash, also known as resin. Both come from the same plant but differ in processing, texture, aroma and storage. Here is an overview of the main differences.
What are CBD flowers?
CBD flowers are the female flower heads of the hemp plant, harvested when mature, trimmed, dried and then left to rest for several weeks. This stage, known as curing, takes place in closed containers and serves to even out residual moisture and stabilise the aromas.
The surface of the flowers is covered with trichomes, tiny resin glands that contain cannabinoids such as CBD, as well as terpenes, the compounds responsible for the scent. In a well-processed flower the trichomes are clearly visible and give it a shiny, almost sugary look.
What is CBD hash?
Hash is a concentrate of trichomes separated from the plant and then compacted. There are three common production methods:
- Dry sifting: dried plant material is shaken over increasingly fine screens, which hold back the plant matter and let the trichomes pass through.
- Ice water extraction: cold makes the trichomes brittle; stirred in ice-cold water, they break off the plant and are filtered through bags of different mesh sizes. The result is also known as “ice-o-lator” or “bubble hash”.
- Pressing: the trichome powder obtained is compacted, often using heat and pressure, until it forms a block.
The final quality depends heavily on the raw material and the care taken in the process. The Swiss legal limit also applies to hash: the total THC content must remain below 1%.
Texture and appearance
Flowers have a recognisable plant structure: more or less compact buds, trimmed small leaves and colours ranging from light to dark green, sometimes with purple hues or clearly visible orange pistils.
Hash, on the other hand, is a uniform mass, light to dark brown in colour. Depending on the production method, it can be crumbly and sandy or soft and pliable. Heat-pressed varieties tend to be more compact, with a glossy surface.
Aroma
In flowers, the aroma depends mainly on the genetics of the strain and on cultivation. Citrus, fruity, sweet, earthy, spicy or resinous notes can be found, often clearly distinguishable from one strain to another.
In hash, the terpenes are concentrated together with the trichomes, but processing and pressing change the aromatic profile. The scent is often rounder and spicier, with notes of wood, earth or incense. Here too, much depends on the starting material and the method used.
Storage
Both products are sensitive to light, heat and air, which degrade cannabinoids and terpenes over time. Their requirements, however, differ slightly:
- Flowers: should be kept in an airtight glass jar, in a dark, cool place, at moderate relative humidity. Too much humidity encourages mould; too little makes the flowers dry and brittle.
- Hash: is less sensitive to humidity, but tends to dry out and harden if left exposed to air. It is best wrapped in baking paper and stored in a closed container, away from light and heat sources.
In both cases, it is useful to keep the product in its original labelled packaging or to note the strain and purchase date. And of course it should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
How to assess them at a glance
With flowers, quality is fairly easy to see: intact buds, visible trichomes, careful trimming and a clean scent with no damp or musty smell. With hash, assessment is less straightforward: what matters is a uniform mass, no visible impurities and a clean aroma. If in doubt, asking about the origin and production method is always a good idea.
Which one to choose?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer: it is mainly a matter of personal preference in terms of appearance, texture and aroma. If you appreciate the variety of aromatic profiles and the structure of the flower, take a look at our CBD flowers; if you prefer a compact form, you will find our CBD hash and resins.
