How to choose a dry herb vaporizer

A dry herb vaporizer heats plant material to a controlled temperature, without combustion, and releases vapour carrying aroma and terpenes. Before choosing a model, it is worth checking a few practical points.

• Portable or desktop: portable models run on a battery and fit in a pocket or bag; a desktop vaporizer stays plugged into the mains and is designed for use at home.
• Convection or conduction: with convection, hot air flows through the material; with conduction, heat is transferred through contact with the chamber walls. Many devices combine both systems. In general, convection heats more evenly, while conduction is simpler and more compact.
• Temperature control: some models can be set degree by degree, others offer preset levels. Different temperatures bring out different terpenes.
• Size, battery life and charging: a pocket device is discreet but has a smaller battery; larger models usually offer longer battery life.
• Dry herbs only or concentrates too: some vaporizers also take resins and extracts, either directly or with a dedicated insert.

The 8 models compared

In the shop you will find eight vaporizers from four brands, from pocket models to a desktop vaporizer.

The Storz & Bickel Venty is the fastest model from the brand and is ready in about 20 seconds. On the Venty and the Mighty+ MEDIC, the temperature can be set between 40 and 210 °C according to the manufacturer. The DaVinci IQ3 features the Cool-Core system that cools the vapour, the DaVinci IQC has an airtight vapour path, and the Wolkenkraft FX Mini, made in Germany, uses convection in a compact format. The PAX Mini is the smallest device in the PAX range.

Dry herb vaporizer or liquid vape

These are two different devices. A dry herb vaporizer heats flowers or Hashish directly in a chamber; a vape or e-cigarette uses liquids or ready-made cartridges heated by a coil. Maintenance and cleaning

Regular cleaning keeps the aroma of the vapour clean and extends the life of the device. A few general rules apply, always to be checked against the manufacturer's instructions:

• empty the chamber when the device is cold and remove residue with the supplied brush;
• check and replace filters and screens regularly;
• clean the mouthpiece and removable parts with isopropyl alcohol and let them dry completely before reassembling;
• never immerse the part containing the battery and electronics in liquid.
